As you might have noticed, we’ve been moving things around in the People tab. A few months ago, we introduced custom attributes. This feature was especially well-received since it allows you to fully segment your users and tailor in-app experiences to different customers. The options are basically endless as you can create segments based on your custom data and build personalized in-app experiences that truly suit your needs.

And just a month ago, we added the tagging feature. With tagging, you can quickly tag chosen users and use those tags later on as a parameter to create a segment. It’s another part of the advanced segmentation that we offer. Tags are great for highlighting and targeting specific customers - you can use them not only to include certain users within a segment but also to exclude some users out of it.

Now, one month later, we’re happy to reveal our newest, highly-requested feature - People export. You can now download a file with users' data from the People tab, including their usage in JSON format, or in CSV format if you’re interested only in users’ export without usage data.

People export provides the easiest way to find out how your users engage with your Inline Manual content making it easier for you to enable product-led tactics. It empowers your organization to make necessary decisions based on accurate, objective numbers. Looking into data is one of the most important factors in creating product-led growth. So let’s dive into how you can take advantage of it. It’ll benefit your users and your company.

Analyze and target users based on the usage details

We all want happy and engaged users. Focusing on delivering a great product experience and empowering users to discover the key features they need in context is a priority in today’s product-led growth model. The more your customers are using your product and getting immediate value from it, the more likely it is that they will stick around with you and become your brand ambassadors.

One of the ways to build engagement is with personalized, targeted communication. Targeted messages are perfect for marketing, onboarding, but also for support. You can use them to deliver important information, increase feature adoption and highlight deals and special offers.

But you need to be 100% sure that you won’t interrupt your users. The more specific segments of users you’ll create and target, the more relevant, helpful and successful the message will be. Defining and targeting the right customers is the key to successful and engaging messaging. People data can help you with that.

With People data, you can answer the following questions:

  • Who are your users?
  • How do they interact with your topics?
  • Which topics are your users interested in mostly?
  • Which topics are your users struggling with?

You will know exactly which user engaged with which topic. And this is what makes it so useful. With these insights, you can figure out how to send the right message to the right users at the right time. By understanding how your users interact with your Inline Manual content, you’ll be able to customize the topics to meet specific users’ needs. This will improve the customer experience.

You’re not only able to reach out to the most engaged users but also save the ones in trouble! Let’s imagine your users start multiple different topics without finishing them. Most likely these users need some assistance. Maybe they are experiencing some errors or having trouble with your app? Spotting such customers and reaching out will enhance your product experience and make your customers pleased.

Connect People data to a 3rd party tool to see a bigger picture

Nowadays, companies rarely rely on reporting from one specific software, instead, they connect the data from multiple different sources to have all the reports in one place and perform a comprehensive analysis. And the information that you can uncover with People usage data makes it an essential part of product-led growth.

There are many factors that make People usage data particularly valuable. One of the most important benefits is the ability to import it to other services. Connecting People data into 3rd party data analytics tools, such as Tableau or PowerBi can help you make better decisions and ultimately help your organization onboard, retain and convert users.

You can take Inline Manual data and use it to improve different areas of your product and boost user engagement and satisfaction. People usage data is specific and relevant to your Inline Manual content, and ultimately your product. By connecting it with other data you track, you’ll get the full picture and find answers to your specific questions.

There’s a lot of things you can learn from People usage data. By importing it into your BI tool, you could answer questions such as:

  • What are your most popular Inline Manual topics?
  • How do different user parameters (location, browser, system, etc.) impact Inline Manual usage?
  • How is feature adoption relevant to the user parameters?
  • How does Inline Manual usage correlate to your application usage?
  • Which features your customers use the most?
  • How does Inline Manual usage differ between user segments?
  • Which customers need an extra push?

And these are just some ideas that you can pass to your data team! With these answers, you would be able to make better product decisions and build an effective long term product-led growth strategy.

Now that you know what People usage data is and why it’s so valuable, let’s take a look at some examples of how to use it.

Let’s imagine that you want to know more about users who have recently purchased a subscription after the free trial.

You may want to take a look at what these users have in common. Maybe each of these customers completed all your onboarding tutorials or perhaps actively used your helpful hotspots and tooltips? Maybe most of these users share the same demographic data or behave similarly?

The same way you can look at users who have eg. churned recently or didn’t subscribe. You may find some fascinating info!

It’s up to you to start experimenting and analyzing the data you collect. Have you tried connecting it already? Share your thoughts with us! How do you see you using it, to see the bigger picture? What will you be looking for and how would you act on that? We can’t wait to read your comments and ideas!
